1972 Equatorial Guinea Munich Olympic Medals Stamp Set

Released as a set of seven stamps from Equatorial Guinea, they show some of the gold medalists from the 1972 Olympic Summer Games in Munich. 

The first gold medalist is Ulrike Meyfarth, a high jumper from West Germany. At the time, Meyfarth became the youngest athlete to win a gold medal in an individual athletics competition, at only 16 years old. Meyfarth won her gold medal in the women's high jump event. 

During the 1972 Summer Games, Valeriy Borzov of the USSR won multiple gold medals, with wins in the 100 and 200m events. Borzov also won a sliver medal in the 4 x 100m relay. 

Mark Spitz, an American swimmer, had one of the greatest performances in Olympic history. Spitz won seven gold metals, a record that wasn't broken until the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Spitz's wins were in the 200m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4 x 100m freestyle relay, 4 x 200m freestyle relay, and 4 x 100 medley relay. 


Sawao Kato was an Olympic athlete from Japan who won five medals in gymnastics: one gold medal in the team event, a gold medal in the all-around event, a gold medal in the parallel bar event, a silver medal in the pommel horse event, and a silver medal in the horizontal bar event. 


Mary Peters was a Northern Irish athlete who won a gold metal in the women's pentathlon event at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.  


At the 1972 Olympic Games, Klaus Wolfermann won a gold metal for West Germany in the men's javelin throw event. 


 Olga Korbut, a Soviet gymnast, won four total medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games: three gold medals and a silver medal. She won gold medals in the team event, the balance beam event, and the floor exercise event, and a silver medal in the uneven bars event. 

All of these athletes won a combined 22 medals and set numerous records. These athletes set new standards for future Olympians to reach for and accomplished many achievement in their respective sports. They will be forever remembered as some of the best athletes in Olympic history.
